How Swiss Standard German Changes Keyword Research

Why ss instead of the Eszett changes which query you compete for, plus the Helvetisms that sit on high-intent commercial terms in Switzerland.

A Swiss searcher looking for a quotation types Offerte. A German searcher types Angebot. Both words mean the same thing, both are correct German, and only one of them is the term your Swiss prospect actually enters into Google. That single substitution, repeated across a few hundred commercial terms, is the difference between a keyword plan built for Switzerland and a keyword plan imported from Germany with the phone number changed.

Switzerland has four national languages, a written German standard that differs from Germany's, and a spoken German that has no standardised written form at all. Google holds 83.51% of Swiss search across all devices as of July 2026, followed by Bing at 9.3%, Yahoo at 2%, DuckDuckGo at 1.97%, Yandex at 1.75% and Ecosia at 1.15%, so the platform question is settled. The language question is not, and it is where most foreign entries into this market lose their money.

This article covers what the federal language data actually says, why the written and spoken varieties diverge, which vocabulary differences carry commercial intent, how Romandie and Ticino differ from France and Italy, and what we could not find measured anywhere. That last section matters as much as the rest.

Two federal surveys, two different pictures

The Federal Statistical Office measures language use twice. Once for the language spoken at home, once for the language used at work. Practitioners quote the first and plan against the second, which is backwards for anyone selling to businesses.

From the Structural Survey covering 2024, published in March 2026, the home picture for residents aged 15 and over runs: Swiss German 54.7%, French 22.9%, Standard High German 11.8%, Italian 8.3%, English 7.0%, Portuguese 3.7%, Albanian 3.4%, Spanish 3.0%, Romansh 0.5%. The workplace picture reorders things: Swiss German 60.8%, Standard High German 35.6%, French 27.6%, English 23.6%, Italian 8.0%, Romansh 0.3%.

Those totals exceed 100%, and that is not an error. Since 2010 respondents have been able to name more than one main language, so the figures describe overlapping populations rather than exclusive slices. Anyone who presents them as a pie chart has already misread them.

Read the workplace column again. English sits at 23.6%, ahead of Italian, and it is concentrated in exactly the places where enterprise demand concentrates: Zürich, Zug, Geneva. For a business-to-business seller that is not a curiosity. It is a reason to treat English as a genuine commercial locale in Switzerland rather than as a fallback, and it is part of why Google shipped AI Overviews here in four languages including English while Germany and Austria received two.

Swiss German is spoken, Swiss Standard German is written

This is the fact that everything else in this article depends on, and it is routinely misunderstood.

Swiss German is a group of Alemannic dialects used in everyday speech across German-speaking Switzerland. It has no standardised written form. There is no agreed orthography, no dictionary of record, no version taught as correct writing. When a Swiss company publishes a website, a contract, a press release or a product page, it writes in Swiss Standard German, which is a codified national variety of Standard German with its own accepted vocabulary, spelling conventions and institutional terminology.

So the language people speak and the language they type are not the same language. That gap creates a specific failure mode for keyword research: a researcher listens to how Swiss customers talk, transliterates that into search terms, and produces queries nobody enters. The correct input is not spoken dialect. It is the written variety that Swiss people actually use in a search box, which is Swiss Standard German with Swiss vocabulary.

The second consequence is subtler and it shows up later in this series. Because Swiss websites publish in a variety that is close to Germany-German, retrieval systems can treat Swiss and German material as one language pool. That pool is dominated by a web roughly ten times the size of Switzerland's. We deal with that problem separately. For now, note that it starts here, in the absence of a written dialect standard.

The Eszett is a keyword problem, not a styling preference

Swiss Standard German does not use ß. Ever. The character is replaced by ss in every position, without exception, in official texts, in newspapers, in commercial writing and in the way Swiss people type.

The commercial consequence is direct. A Swiss user searching for a street types Strasse. A German user types Straße. These are different strings. If your page targets one and your audience types the other, you are competing in the wrong query. Multiply that across Straße, groß, Maß, Grüße, Schließfach, Preisnachlaß and every compound built on them, and a Germany-market keyword set stops matching Swiss demand in a way that no amount of content quality repairs.

The orthographic difference is not the only one. A corpus study from the University of Zürich, published in June 2018, compared one million sentences of Swiss Standard German against one million sentences of Germany-German using data-driven methods. It found measurable differences across vocabulary, morphosyntax and syntax, including a shorter average sentence length on the Swiss side, 14.82 words against 15.85. That is a research finding about written registers, not a style rule, and it supports a practical point: the two varieties differ enough to be measured by machine, which means they differ enough to matter to a search engine.

Written variety, not accent

Three Ways a Germany-German Keyword Set Misses Switzerland

None of these are tone problems. Each one changes the query string being competed for.

Orthography

Swiss Standard German replaces ß with ss in every position. Strasse and Straße are two different strings, and only one of them is typed by Swiss searchers.

Vocabulary

Offerte rather than Angebot, Spital rather than Krankenhaus, Natel for a mobile phone, Velo for a bicycle. These sit on commercial-intent terms, not on decorative ones.

Demand shape

German volumes describe a market roughly ten times larger. Importing them produces a priority order that does not match Swiss reality, even where the words happen to overlap.

And the honest limit on all three

No published study quantifies the ranking penalty for serving Germany-market German to a Swiss audience. We did not find one in four independent research passes, and we do not invent a figure. What is verifiable is narrower and still sufficient: the strings differ, the institutional vocabulary differs, and the trust signal differs on first read.

Helvetisms that sit on money terms

Not every Swiss word matters for search. Plenty of Helvetisms are conversational, regional or fading, and chasing all of them wastes time. The ones worth mapping are the ones attached to a transaction, a service category or an institution, because those are the terms a buyer types when they have intent.

The table below covers the substitutions we treat as primary rather than as synonyms. Primary means the Swiss form is the head term in the keyword map and the German form is at best a secondary variant, not the other way round.

Two of those entries are French borrowings that settled into German-speaking Switzerland, which tells you something about how the language regions actually interact. They are not sealed off from each other. Vocabulary crosses the Röstigraben in both directions, and a keyword map that treats the three regions as three separate countries will miss those crossings.

One caution on sourcing. Some published Helvetism lists are longer than the ones we work from, and several of the additional entries appeared in only one of our four research passes without a named reference. We left those out. A term that cannot be corroborated is a term we would be guessing about, and guessing about vocabulary is how a foreign agency reveals itself.

Romandie is not France, and Ticino is not Italy

French-speaking Switzerland has its own conventions, and the numerals are the clearest signal. Swiss French uses septante for seventy and nonante for ninety, where France uses soixante-dix and quatre-vingt-dix. Huitante for eighty appears in parts of Romandie, notably Vaud, though usage is not uniform across cantons. Anyone writing prices, quantities, dates or measurements into French-language commercial content is making a choice here whether they know it or not.

Number formatting differs too. Swiss usage commonly employs the apostrophe as a thousands separator, so a figure appears as 1'000'000 rather than 1.000.000 or 1,000,000. That looks cosmetic until you consider where numbers live on a commercial site: prices, specification tables, structured data, comparison pages. Getting it wrong signals foreign production on exactly the pages where a buyer is evaluating you.

Italian-speaking Switzerland is smaller, at roughly 8% of the home-language population, and it is the region most often dropped from multilingual plans on the argument that the volume is not worth it. Sometimes that is the correct commercial call. It should be made against your own revenue distribution, though, not against national population share, and it should be made explicitly rather than by omission.

Here is the part that is rarely stated. No published dataset splits Swiss search or SEO spend by language region. We looked in four independent research passes and found nothing usable. So any agency that tells you German-speaking Switzerland represents a specific percentage of Swiss search demand is producing a number from population statistics and presenting it as demand data. Population share is a planning proxy. It is not a measurement of commercial search volume, and treating it as one produces confident allocations built on nothing.

Romansh, and the discipline of not filling a gap

Romansh is a national language with roughly 0.5% of the resident population, primary-speaker counts in the low tens of thousands, and a long-term downward trend. Federal content appears in Rumantsch Grischun, the standardised written form introduced to serve administrative needs, while several regional idioms remain in living use. Google Translate added Romansh support in 2022.

No credible dataset measures commercial Romansh query volume. That is the honest answer, and there is a specific trap in how it gets reported. Absence of data is not the same as zero searches. An agency that converts one into the other is making a claim it cannot support, in the direction that happens to be convenient.

The fragmentation compounds the measurement problem. Multiple idioms plus a standardised written variety means the same concept can be expressed several ways, so exact-query tooling scatters what little volume exists across variants that each look like noise. For commercial work in Graubünden we recommend German-language targeting and treat Romansh as a public-service, cultural or mandate-driven decision. If a client has a reason to publish in Romansh, that reason is legitimate. It is just not a volume argument, and it should not be sold as one.

Establish demand inside each locale, separately

Run discovery with Swiss country settings and Swiss orthography for de-CH, then independently for fr-CH and it-CH. Add an English set where the workplace-language data supports it, which in Zürich, Zug and Geneva it usually does.

Map Helvetisms as head terms

Offerte, Spital, Natel, Velo, parkieren and their neighbours become primary targets. The Germany-German equivalents drop to secondary variants, and only where there is evidence Swiss users also use them.

Normalise orthography and formatting across the set

Only now decide what gets translated

Translation is for content, not for demand discovery. A term that has no volume in Italian does not acquire volume by being translated from a German page that ranks.

What four research passes could not find

We ran this market through four independent research passes and cross-checked every quantitative claim against a named primary source. Four things came back empty, and they are worth listing because the gaps get filled with invented numbers otherwise.

There is no measured ranking penalty for publishing Germany-market German to Swiss audiences. There is no published split of Swiss SEO or search spend by language region. There is no credible commercial query-volume figure for Romansh. And there is no Swiss figure for how often AI Overviews appear in results, which we address separately since it belongs to a different measurement problem.

One additional note on sourcing discipline. Across those four passes we found a rate card attributed to a named Swiss consultant with a figure carrying two decimal places and a confidence marker of verified, which no other pass reproduced and which two other passes contradicted with a different number from the same consultant. We excluded it. False precision is a specific tell, and a figure that appears in exactly one place with more decimal points than the underlying evidence supports is usually a figure that was constructed rather than found.

A working sequence, and the part that is actually hard

The technical steps are not complicated. Set country and language correctly in your research tooling. Build separate query sets per locale. Treat Swiss vocabulary as primary. Normalise orthography before content production, not after. Allocate effort by revenue rather than by population.

The hard part is organisational. Producing four locales natively costs more than translating one, and the cost lands before the results do, which makes it the first thing cut when a budget tightens. The usual compromise is to produce German properly and derive French and Italian from it, and that compromise is defensible if it is made openly, with the client understanding that two of their four locales are running on adapted rather than native content. What is not defensible is presenting derived content as native production. Swiss buyers can tell, and the pages that matter most are exactly the ones where they are paying closest attention.

Our own position on this page is worth stating for the same reason. We publish our Switzerland material in English rather than in four half-quality locales, because publishing machine-grade German would contradict the argument we are making in it. English is also defensible on the data: 23.6% of the working population uses it at work, and Google supported it as one of four AI Overview languages at the Swiss launch.
