What Is AI SEO? Two Meanings, One Playbook, and What the Platforms Actually Say

AI SEO means two jobs: using AI to do SEO, and getting cited in AI answers. What Google, OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic and Microsoft actually say, checked.

AI SEO has two meanings. One is using AI tools to do SEO work, like clustering keywords or drafting briefs. The other is getting your pages found and cited inside AI answers from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, also called GEO or AEO. Google says optimizing for its own AI features is still SEO.

We are an agency that sells SEO and GEO services, so read this knowing we have a stake in the answer. That is why this piece leans on evidence nobody here is selling: the platforms' own documentation, independent research, and vendor studies that we label as vendor studies. Where the evidence runs out, we say so.

Every platform rule and tool price below was checked on October 26, 2026, on the platform's or vendor's own page, and our ChatGPT test ran on October 27, 2026. AI search changes month to month. Treat each date as part of the fact it sits next to.

What is AI SEO? Two meanings

Search "ai seo" and you get both meanings at once. In Ahrefs' snapshot of the US top 10 (last updated October 20, 2026), an AI SEO tools roundup, a how-to on AI-powered SEO tools and an AI SEO product homepage sat next to guides about getting cited by AI assistants. Neither group is wrong. They are answering different questions, and that mix is where most of the confusion (and a fair share of bad purchases) comes from.

Two meanings, one search term

AI SEO Means Two Different Jobs

Search results and AI answers use the same phrase for both. Before you buy a tool or a service, check which of the two jobs it actually does.

Meaning A

AI for SEO

Using AI tools to do SEO work

What you do

Cluster keywords from your own data, draft briefs and outlines, write first drafts, draft schema, summarize reports. A person checks every fact before anything goes live.

Typical tools

General AI assistants, content optimizers, site crawlers, and SEO suites with AI features.

How you measure it

Hours saved, errors caught in review, and the usual Search Console numbers: impressions, clicks, positions.

The rule to know

Google: generating many pages with AI "without adding value for users may violate Google's spam policy on scaled content abuse."

Meaning B

SEO for AI search

Being found, mentioned and cited in AI answers, also called GEO or AEO

What you do

Let the right crawlers in, stay indexed and eligible for a snippet, publish non-commodity content, and earn real mentions instead of seeded ones.

Where it shows up

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude. Most of them document their own crawler controls.

How you measure it

Search Console generative AI impressions, Bing AI Performance citations, AI referrals in GA4, and a fixed set of test prompts.

The rule to know

Google: optimizing for its generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."

Where the two meet

Writing a page with AI is meaning A. It does not, on its own, decide whether that page gets cited, which is meaning B. None of the platform documentation we checked says AI-written pages are cited more often or less often. Both jobs rest on the same base: pages that can be crawled, indexed and trusted.

Meaning A: AI for SEO

This is the older meaning, and the one most tool vendors use. You take an AI assistant or an SEO suite with AI features and use it to do parts of the job faster: group a keyword export into topics, draft a content brief, write a first draft, generate schema markup, summarize a monthly report. In the US, "ai for seo" gets about 2,300 searches a month, per Ahrefs.

Google is fine with this, within limits. Its guidance on generative AI content says that using AI tools to generate many pages "without adding value for users" may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse, and that "It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing." Read those two lines again. The problem is never the tool. It is volume without value, and facts nobody checked.

Meaning B: SEO for AI search

This is the newer meaning, and it is what people usually mean when they ask "What is SEO for AI?" The goal is to have your pages found, mentioned and cited when someone asks an AI system a question, whether that is Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude or Gemini. In the US, "seo for ai" gets about 1,600 searches a month, and "seo for ai search" and "ai search seo" about 1,000 each.

Here is the part many guides skip. Google says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, per its AI features page. Since August 31, 2026, there is one more condition worldwide: the site must be included in the "Search generative AI" setting in Search Console. Include is the default. Other platforms work differently, and each documents its own crawlers, which we get to below. Our AI visibility optimization guide goes further into the meaning B side.

What is AI SEO called now?

Depends who you ask. "Generative engine optimization," or GEO, comes from a research paper first posted in November 2023 and published at KDD 2024. Its authors tested optimization methods on their own benchmark, a simulated engine in which gpt-3.5-turbo answered from the top five Google results, and reported visibility gains of "up to 40%" for the best methods. On Perplexity.ai itself, they saw gains of up to 37%. Answer engine optimization (AEO) covers much the same ground, and you will also see LLMO, for large language model optimization. Bing describes its AI citation report as "an early step toward Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) tooling."

Google takes the opposite line. Its guide to generative AI features says optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO," and tells site owners to "Prioritize effective SEO strategies over "AEO/GEO hacks"." Search demand is split as well. In the US, "ai seo" and "generative engine optimization" each draw about 7,800 searches a month, and "ai search optimization" about 4,900, per Ahrefs on October 26, 2026. For the longer argument, see is GEO just SEO? and our look at GEO vs SEO effectiveness.

How ChatGPT answers "What is AI SEO?": our 35-answer test

We wanted to know which meaning an AI assistant hands people by default. So we asked ChatGPT seven fixed questions, five times each, in fresh logged-out sessions from a US IP address on October 27, 2026, between 04:02 and 04:39 UTC. Logged-out users are not shown a model version, so we cannot tell you which model answered. Every answer was saved in full with its timestamp, and the counts are fractions of what we collected. Nothing more.

Our test, October 26 and 27, 2026

We Asked ChatGPT About AI SEO 35 Times

Seven questions, five fresh runs each, logged out, from a US IP address. Two single Google searches appear at the bottom and are not part of the count.

15 of 15

Every answer opened with meaning B

Asked "What is AI SEO?", "Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?" and "What is AI SEO called now?", ChatGPT led every time with getting a site found, cited or recommended in AI answers. Using AI tools to do SEO work came up in only 5 of 15, further down: three times to say it is a different job, twice as part of a looser umbrella term.

Four common claims, checked against official pages

Does Google penalize AI-generated content?

5 of 5

said no, not for being AI-made. The risk they named was low-value pages produced at scale.

Matches Google's generative AI content guidance

Does schema markup help with AI search visibility?

5 of 5

said it helps machines read a page but guarantees no citation. 5 of 5 repeated Google's line that no special schema is needed for its AI features.

Matches Google's AI optimization guide

Does llms.txt help AI SEO?

5 of 5

said any benefit is unproven, yet 2 of 5 still opened with "may help." 5 of 5 said Google Search does not use the file.

Matches Google's llms.txt note

Should I block AI crawlers like GPTBot in robots.txt?

5 of 5

said not to block by reflex, then suggested a setup that blocks GPTBot (training) and allows OAI-SearchBot (search). 2 of 5 also mentioned Google-Extended.

Method: ChatGPT logged-out sessions from a US IP address, October 27, 2026, 04:02 to 04:39 UTC, 7 questions with 5 runs each. The model version is not shown to logged-out users. Full answer texts and timestamps were saved. Our capture saved link URLs in only 9 of 35 runs, so we make no claim about which sites ChatGPT cites most. Arfadia was mentioned in 0 of 35 answers. The two Google searches differ in location, language and date, so they show that answers can differ, not how often.
Created by Arfadia • arfadia.com/blog

The short version: ChatGPT treats AI SEO as meaning B. All 15 definition answers led with it. Meaning A came up in only 5 of 15, lower down, and three of those five raised it to say it is a different job.

On the four factual questions, none of the 20 answers contradicted the official pages we checked. That surprised us a little. Two of the five llms.txt answers still opened with "may help" before explaining that the benefit is unproven, which is exactly the kind of hedge that gets quoted out of context. The source labels visible in the answers were mostly Google's developer documentation, plus a few third-party sites such as Search Engine Land, EMARKETER and Ahrefs. Our capture saved full link URLs in only 9 of 35 runs, though, so we make no claim about which sites ChatGPT cites most. Arfadia was mentioned in 0 of 35 answers, which says nothing about us either way, because the questions were generic. Some answers made claims we could not trace to an original source, so those are not in this article.

Google did not always agree with ChatGPT. One logged-out search for "ai seo" from a US IP address on October 26 got an AI Overview built on meaning B. One logged-out search from an Indonesian IP address, in Google's Indonesian interface, on October 27 opened with meaning A, AI used to automate and speed up SEO work, and mentioned GEO further down. Two single searches cannot tell you how often each version appears. So if you are buying "AI SEO," write down which meaning you are paying for.

What Google, OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic and Microsoft officially say

Each platform publishes its own rules, and they do not line up. Google ties its AI features to its search index. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity each run separate crawlers for search and for pages a user asks the assistant to open, and OpenAI and Anthropic add a third for model training. Microsoft gives site owners a citation report. Even Google's two AI features are not one system: Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary."

"Not documented" means we could not find it on the platform's own pages, not that it does not exist.

Three things stand out. First, training and search are separate switches at OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, and Perplexity says its search crawler is not used to train foundation models at all. OpenAI says "Each setting is independent of the others," and Google says Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal." Google-Extended does reach past training, though: it also covers grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. Second, fetches a user triggers play by different rules: OpenAI says robots.txt rules "may not apply" to ChatGPT-User, and Perplexity says Perplexity-User "generally ignores robots.txt rules." Third, the measurement is lopsided. Google's generative AI report in Search Console shows impressions only, by page, country, date and device, with no queries. Bing's AI Performance report shows total citations, cited pages and a sample of grounding queries, and Bing says the data does not indicate ranking, authority, or the role of any page.

For platform-by-platform detail, see our guides to Google AI Overviews, Gemini and AI Mode, getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot.

Crawler controls, checked October 26, 2026

Blocking a Training Bot Is Not the Same as Leaving AI Search

Each company below documents which crawler does what: search, model training, or fetching a page a user asked for. Not every company has all three. This is what their own pages say.

OpenAI

ChatGPT and ChatGPT search

Training

GPTBot

Disallowing it signals that content should not be used to train foundation models.

Search

OAI-SearchBot

Opted-out sites are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.

User fetch

ChatGPT-User

robots.txt rules "may not apply" because a user started the action.

OpenAI says each setting is independent. Search changes take about 24 hours.

Google

Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini Apps

Search

Googlebot

Crawls for Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.

AI features

Search Console control

"Search generative AI" setting: Include (default), Exclude, or Inherit. Google says it is not a ranking signal for the rest of Search.

Training

Google-Extended

A robots.txt token, not a separate crawler. Covers Gemini model training and grounding in Gemini Apps. It "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search."

Anthropic

Claude with web search

Training

ClaudeBot

Blocking it signals that future content should be left out of training data.

Search

Claude-SearchBot

Blocking it "may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results."

User fetch

Claude-User

Blocking it may reduce visibility for user-directed web search.

Anthropic says all three honor robots.txt, including Crawl-delay.

Perplexity

Perplexity answers

Search

PerplexityBot

Surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results. Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.

User fetch

Perplexity-User

"Generally ignores robots.txt rules" because a user requested the fetch.

Training

None listed

No separate training crawler appears on its crawler page.

Perplexity publishes IP ranges so firewalls can allow its bots.

What this means in practice

Blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot limits training use. Blocking Google-Extended limits Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. None of them takes you out of ChatGPT search, Claude search or Google's AI Overviews. Those depend on OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, and Googlebot plus the Search Console setting. xAI had published no crawler documentation for Grok that we could find.

AI SEO claims checked against official sources

Most AI SEO advice boils down to a handful of claims. Here is each one next to what the platform itself says and what the better studies found. Vendor studies are labeled, and every source was checked on October 26, 2026.

Claim What The Platform Says What Studies Show Verdict Checked
"Add an llms.txt file to show up in AI search"Google: llms.txt files will "neither harm nor help" visibility or rankings in Google Search, which ignores themTrakkr (vendor), scan of March 14, 2026: 13.3% of 37,894 AI-cited domains had the file. Across all of them, the citation difference was statistically significant but small (r = -0.065); among the 5,000 most-cited, it was not significant (p = 0.85). Trakkr says neither result shows what adding the file would causeNot supported for Google; unproven elsewhereOct 26, 2026

Anthropic: ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot are separatearXiv preprint (April 2026, 11,500 queries): sites that block Google's AI crawler were "significantly less likely to be retrieved by AIOs." Bing: citation data does not indicate rankingOverlap between top 10 rankings and AI Overview citations ranges from about 17% to 76.1% depending on method (see below)No platform supports a guaranteeOct 26, 2026

Our ChatGPT test lines up with this table: none of the 20 answers on these four topics contradicted the platform pages. One gap is worth noting. All five GPTBot answers split training from search correctly, but only two of five mentioned Google-Extended, which matters if you are deciding about Gemini training. For more, see GEO myths debunked and what Google requires for AI citations.

Using AI for SEO work without breaking Google's rules

Meaning A is mostly a workflow question. Google's spam policies say scaled content abuse applies "no matter how it's created," and they now count "attempting to manipulate generative AI responses in Google Search" as spam too. Inside those lines, AI is a genuinely useful assistant. The table below is our working view from day-to-day SEO work, not a study, so read it as experience rather than data.

SEO Task Where AI Helps Where It Fails Human Check
Keyword researchGrouping an exported keyword list into topics and intentsInventing search volumes or difficulty scoresTake volumes from a keyword tool, never from a chat
Briefs and outlinesTurning notes and top-ranking pages into a first outlineCopying what already ranks; missing what only you knowAdd your own data, examples and point of view
First draftsSpeed on structure and plain wordingConfident wrong facts; generic commodity textCheck every number, name and quote against its source
Schema markupDrafting JSON-LD from content that is visible on the pageProperties that do not match the page or do not existRun the page through Google's Rich Results Test
Technical auditsExplaining a crawl export or a log sampleIt does not crawl your site by itselfRun a real crawler and check Search Console
Titles and meta descriptionsMany variants, fastLength limits and duplicates across pagesCount characters with a script and check for duplicates
ReportingSummarizing exports in plain languageMisreading columns, inventing trendsCompare each stated number with the export
TranslationA first pass in another languageWrong local terms, units and search habitsNative speaker review plus local keyword data

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

Parts of it. ChatGPT can cluster keywords you give it, draft briefs and meta descriptions, explain a crawl report, and write schema you then validate. It cannot see your Search Console data unless you paste it in, it does not crawl your whole site the way a crawler does, and any volume number it gives you is not keyword data unless it came from a tool you can check. It also cannot promise rankings. Google says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google," and that covers AI tools as much as agencies. Use it like a fast junior colleague: good first drafts, every fact checked.

An AI SEO strategy in 10 steps

Each step is tagged A (AI for SEO), B (SEO for AI search) or A+B. Steps 1 to 4 cost nothing but time. Do them in order, because if you skip the baseline in step 4, step 10 has nothing to compare against.

1. Decide which meaning you are paying for (A+B)

Before buying a tool or signing a retainer, write one sentence: are you trying to do SEO faster (A), get cited in AI answers (B), or both? A content optimizer will not get you into ChatGPT answers. An AI visibility tracker will not write your briefs. And since two single Google searches from different countries returned different definitions, put the meaning in the contract.

2. Check crawler access engine by engine (B)

Open your robots.txt and your firewall or CDN bot settings. Check OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), Claude-SearchBot (Claude search), PerplexityBot (Perplexity) and Googlebot separately from the training tokens GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. A blanket "block AI bots" switch can catch search crawlers you meant to allow. OpenAI says robots.txt changes for its search crawler take about 24 hours to apply.

3. Confirm indexing, snippets and the Search Console generative AI setting (B)

Google's AI features only use pages that are indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Run URL Inspection on your key pages, look for stray noindex or nosnippet rules, and open the "Search generative AI" setting in Search Console. Include is the default. Exclude takes your site out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover, and Google's announcement says sites that opt out "will not receive traffic or impressions from our generative AI features."

4. Set a baseline (B)

Write down four things with today's date: Search Console generative AI impressions for your top pages, Bing AI Performance citations, GA4 sessions from AI referrers (ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its referral links), and the answers to 10 to 20 fixed prompts, saved as text or screenshots. Without these, every later claim of progress is a guess. Ours included.

5. Write an AI use policy (A)

One page is enough. Which tasks AI may draft, who checks facts and numbers, which sources count, and what never ships without a human read. Google asks for exactly this kind of review of AI content, and a written policy is what keeps a busy team from drifting into scaled content.

6. Use AI on bounded tasks (A)

Give AI jobs with a clear input and an output you can check: cluster this keyword export, draft a brief from these three pages, write JSON-LD for this FAQ, summarize this crawl file. Skip open-ended jobs like "write 50 articles about our city." That is how sites end up on the wrong side of the scaled content policy.

7. Rewrite top pages toward non-commodity content (A+B)

Google's guide uses "7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers" as its example of commodity content, the kind anyone could write. Pick the pages that already earn impressions and add what only you have: original data, the prices you actually charge, real photos, a process you run, a clear answer in the first paragraph. AI can help reorganize a page. It cannot supply the experience.

8. Earn real mentions, not seeded ones (B)

Brand mentions on other sites are a popular AI SEO tactic, and Google is blunt about the shortcut version: "seeking inauthentic "mentions" across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem." Go after real reviews, real press, real partner pages, and quotes in places your buyers already read. If a vendor offers a bundle of planted forum posts, walk away.

9. Skip fan-out page farms (A+B)

Query fan-out is how Google's AI features split one question into several related searches. Some vendors sell a separate page for every variation. Google's guide says creating content like that "primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses in Google Search violates Google's scaled content abuse spam policy." One strong page beats forty thin ones.

10. Re-measure at day 90 and cut what did not move (A+B)

Compare against the baseline from step 4. Keep what moved, drop what did not. Set expectations honestly. We found no published study on how long citation changes take, so this is the working range from our own GEO work, not a study and not a promise. Early signals can show up within 4 to 8 weeks on engines that search the live web, such as Perplexity. On most engines, the first measurable movement shows up around month three, because of a two to three month crawl lag. Consistent citation frequency takes 4 to 8 months.

What the data says about clicks, citations and AI traffic

Many AI SEO studies come from companies that sell SEO tools. That does not make them wrong, but you should know who collected what, when, and on which product. These are the ones we verified at the source.

Two takeaways. Traffic from AI assistants is still small next to search, though in one consultant's data ChatGPT visitors converted at a higher rate. And AI Overviews clearly change click behavior, though the size of the drop depends on whose data you read and when.

Why the overlap numbers do not agree

Several studies asked roughly the same question, how many AI Overview citations also rank in Google's top 10, and got answers from about 17% to 76.1%. Ahrefs found 76.1% in July 2025, then 37.9% in March 2026 counting the "first 10 blocks" of the page, ads and features included, and 37.1% for blue links alone. Ahrefs says it improved its parsing in between, and it suggests fan-out queries now play a bigger role in source selection. BrightEdge's figure of about 17% comes from a year-long analysis in which overlap was tracked over a five-month window. Conductor, with 167,867,680 citations from mid-2026, found 43% of cited pages in the top 10. Different query sets, dates and definitions. Do not average them, and be wary of anyone who quotes one without its method.

Mentioned, cited and clicked are three different things

A brand can be named in an answer without a link. A page can be cited with a link nobody clicks. Pew found that users clicked a link inside the AI summary in just 1% of visits. Search Console's AI report shows impressions, Bing's shows citations, and GA4 shows the clicks that arrive. None of them shows all three. Report them separately, and do not let anyone sell you a mention as a click. We go deeper on this in AI citation metrics vs rankings.

How to measure AI visibility, free tools first

Start with the free reports, because they come from the platforms themselves. Add a paid tracker only when you need prompt-level history across several engines. One line from Google's guide applies to every tool here: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems."

Is SEO dead, and is AI SEO worth it?

No, SEO is not dead. It is spreading into new result types. Google said in June 2026 that "AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users," and both draw on Google's search index. Google's own position is that optimizing for them is still SEO. Interest in the term is real but cooling: US demand for "ai seo" showed up in all 24 months of Ahrefs' trend data (October 2024 to September 2026), peaked at 24,172 in May 2025, and slid from 10,213 in April 2026 to 4,985 in September 2026. We cover the bigger picture in is SEO still relevant.

A keyword pattern that does not look human

While pulling keyword data, we found something odd. Of 4,089 US keywords containing both words "ai" and "seo" (1,696 with the exact phrase "ai seo"), 59 have an Ahrefs search trend that starts in July 2025 and now show at least 300 searches a month each, 45,650 in total. Most rose in lockstep: about 20 searches in July 2025, then more than 200 in August. Many are near-twins, like "best ai mode seo tracker," "best ai mode seo trackers" and "ai mode seo tracking tool," each at 800 to 1,000 a month. Some variants even end in "my location is usa." Two questions, "which seo agencies offer top ai seo services?" and "what is the best ai seo for brand awareness?", sat at zero for 19 months, then jumped to between 3,487 and 7,718 a month from May 2026.

Our inference, not a fact: this looks like automated prompt tracking or tool traffic rather than people. We did not target any of these keywords, and we would not plan content around them.

What an AI SEO service should include, and what it costs

A real service says which meaning it covers, starts with a baseline, reports mentions, citations and clicks separately, and tells you what it will not do. Pricing data is thin. The only survey we found with a written method comes from First Page Sage, a firm that sells GEO itself: 1,146 quotes from 214 agencies, collected July 6 to October 2, 2026, with a median GEO or AEO retainer of $6,850 a month against $4,740 for SEO. Treat it as vendor data. If your budget is closer to zero, our small business digital marketing strategy shows where AI search fits for a small business. For comparison, Arfadia publishes its own packages on our pricing page.

Red flags: guaranteed citations or rankings, llms.txt sold as the main deliverable, packages of planted mentions, a page for every fan-out query, and claims of special access to Google or OpenAI systems. Hold any provider to this list, us included. A guarantee tied to a measured baseline is a different thing from a guaranteed citation. Arfadia's own guarantee is an increase in citation frequency against your baseline within six months, on a question panel agreed at the start, and if that increase is not reached, we keep working at no extra cost. It does not promise any specific citation or position.

When this advice does not apply

If your site chose Exclude in Search Console's generative AI setting, the Google steps here do not apply until you switch it back. Grok had no crawler documentation we could find, so the crawler advice does not cover it. Most studies cited here use US data, and our single Google check from Indonesia suggests answers shift by country and language, so test in your own market. And if your pages are not indexed yet, start there. No AI tactic fixes a page Google cannot find.

How we researched this

We compared research from several AI assistants and kept only claims we could verify on the platform's own pages or in the original study. Documentation was checked October 26, 2026, and prices again on October 27. Keyword data comes from Ahrefs' US database, pulled October 26. Outside claims we could not trace were dropped; the timing range in step 10 is our own and labeled that way.

Tessar Napitupulu covers how AI platforms decide which brands to cite, engine by engine, in Cited or Silent, a free GEO ebook you can read after a short sign-up. If you want help with the meaning B side, our GEO and AEO services page explains how we work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SEO for AI?

SEO for AI is optimizing your site so AI systems such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot can find, use and cite it. Google says its AI features need nothing special: pages must be indexed, eligible for a snippet, and included in the generative AI setting in Search Console.

Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?

Evolving. Google reported in June 2026 that AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode over one billion monthly users, and both use Google's search index. Google calls optimizing for them still SEO. What changed is measurement: mentions, citations and clicks now need separate tracking.

What is AI SEO called now?

The most common names are GEO (generative engine optimization), AEO (answer engine optimization) and LLMO (large language model optimization). In our test of logged-out ChatGPT answers, GEO was named in 14 of 15 definition answers. Google avoids the new labels and says optimizing for its generative AI search is still SEO.

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

Parts of it. ChatGPT can cluster keywords you provide, draft briefs, meta descriptions and schema, and explain reports. It cannot see your Search Console data unless you share it, does not crawl your whole site, and cannot promise rankings. Treat its output as a draft that a person checks before anything goes live.

Does Google penalize AI-generated content?

Not for being AI-generated. Google's guidance says using AI to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse policy, which applies no matter how content is created. Google also says AI-generated content should be fact-checked and reviewed before publishing.

Does llms.txt help AI SEO?

Not for Google. Google's guide says llms.txt files neither help nor harm visibility in Google Search, which ignores them. For other engines the evidence is thin: a March 2026 Trakkr scan of 37,894 AI-cited domains found only a small citation difference across all of them and no significant difference among the 5,000 most-cited, and Trakkr says neither result shows what adding the file would cause.

Should I block AI crawlers like GPTBot in robots.txt?

Only if you do not want your content used for model training, and then block the right token. GPTBot controls OpenAI training, while OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search. Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding but does not affect Google Search. Per the platforms' own documentation, blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot does not take you out of ChatGPT or Claude search.

Can an agency guarantee AI citations?

No. Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Bing says its AI citation data does not indicate ranking. An honest agency can commit to a baseline, a method and clear reporting, not to a citation. What an agency can guarantee is effort against a measured baseline. Arfadia, for example, guarantees an increase in citation frequency within six months on an agreed question panel and keeps working at no extra cost until it is reached.

How long does AI SEO take to show results?

No published study measures this. The working range we use in our own GEO work: early signals within 4 to 8 weeks on engines that search the live web, such as Perplexity; the first measurable movement around month three on most engines, because of a two to three month crawl lag; and consistent citation frequency in 4 to 8 months. It is a range, not a promise.

How much does AI SEO cost?

Measurement can start free with Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and paid AI visibility trackers start around $29 a month. For services, a First Page Sage survey of 1,146 agency quotes from July to October 2026 put the median GEO or AEO retainer at $6,850 a month. First Page Sage sells GEO, so treat that as vendor data.
