About SEO in Ireland
Ireland is an English-language market that shares a search corpus with a far larger neighbour, yet operates under a completely separate set of regulators, currency and statutory obligations. That gap is where most cross-border SEO work fails.
A First-Wave EU Market With Third-Tier AI Overview Exposure
Ireland was not late to AI search. Google brought AI Overviews to Ireland on 26 March 2025, in the first European wave alongside Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, initially for signed-in users aged 18 and over, in English only. France was left out of that group entirely and stayed without the feature into 2026. Despite arriving early, Irish exposure is comparatively low: Ahrefs measured AI Overviews on 12.00% of tracked Irish queries in its 108 million query dataset, ranking Ireland 44th of 50 countries, below Portugal, Denmark and New Zealand, and well below the UK at 19.10% and the US at 20.50%. Any agency quoting a US or UK AI Overview figure at an Irish client is overstating the exposure by roughly 60 to 70 percent.
Shared Language, Separate Jurisdiction
English accounts for 52.75% of all AI Overviews worldwide, which means Irish content competes inside the same language pool that UK content dominates by volume. Ireland gets none of the protective localisation signal that a French or Japanese market gets simply by switching language. What Ireland does have is a completely distinct institutional footprint, and that is the usable differentiator: the Central Bank of Ireland rather than the FCA, the Data Protection Commission rather than the ICO, the Companies Registration Office rather than Companies House, Revenue rather than HMRC, euro pricing rather than sterling, Eircodes rather than postcodes, and solicitors rather than attorneys. Spelling follows British convention, so spelling alone proves nothing. Jurisdictional accuracy does.
Where UK Content Displaces Irish Businesses, and Where It Does Not
The claim that UK content dominates Irish search results is repeated constantly and has never been measured. What the available evidence actually shows is that exposure varies sharply by query class, so this page splits the problem instead of asserting a single answer.
Treated as one "UK and Ireland" market
Regional hub on a .co.uk domain or /uk/ folderLink equity consolidates onto UK URLs, with no dedicated Irish target for search engines or AI systems to converge on.
UK regulators cited in body copyFCA, ICO, HMRC and Companies House referenced where an Irish reader needs the Central Bank of Ireland, the DPC, Revenue and the CRO.
Northern Ireland and the Republic mergedTwo jurisdictions with different currency, tax, regulators and public institutions treated as one addressable market.
Missing or wrong hreflangWithout a correct en-IE signal, Google can serve UK content to Irish users by default.
No Irish-specific FAQPage schemaNothing structured for AI systems to extract a Republic of Ireland answer from.
Built for the Republic of Ireland
Query classes mapped and measured separatelySupplier-selection, informational, comparison and regulated queries tracked as four different exposure profiles, not one.
Irish institutional footprint stated explicitlyNamed Irish regulators, statutes and schemes where they genuinely apply, because jurisdictional accuracy is the signal spelling cannot provide.
Republic and Northern Ireland kept separateMonitored as distinct markets, with an all-island layer added only where it is commercially real.
Correct en-IE architectureA separate Irish page maintained only where it differs materially in currency, legal disclosure or availability.
FAQPage and Organization schema with addressCountry IEStructured for organic ranking and for AI-citation extraction at the same time.
Present on this page What UK-and-Ireland treatment lacks
One honest caveat. The only direct test we could locate on Irish source substitution ran nine explicitly Ireland-qualified commercial prompts through a single retrieval system in August 2026 and returned 30 Irish domains out of 52 grounding URLs, with zero .co.uk results. That points the opposite way to the popular claim, but it is one engine, one run, and it did not test what happens when the prompt omits the word Ireland. Treat the displacement as real and unquantified, not as a settled percentage.
Two Metrics Moving in Opposite Directions
The only click study conducted on Irish data found average ranking position improving while click-through rate fell by more than a quarter. In a market where those two lines diverge, a ranking report is no longer evidence of a commercial result.
Share of tracked queries returning a Google AI Overview
Ahrefs Brand Radar, 108 million AI Overview queries, 4 November 2025 (VERIFIED, primary). Ireland sits below Portugal, Denmark, the Czech Republic and New Zealand. Indonesia is shown because it is where our delivery teams work daily, at three times Ireland's coverage.
3.62%→2.67%
Irish Click-Through Rate Over 16 Months
An analysis of 175 million Irish searches from Google Search Console compared the same spring months year on year and found aggregate click-through rate falling from 3.62% to 2.67%, a drop of 26%, while average position improved from 6.38 to 6.18. The same analysis found commercial-investigation terms holding up far better than informational ones. Reported by Friday.ie on 6 July 2026; the dataset begins after AI Overviews had already rolled out in Ireland, so there is no clean before-and-after baseline.
52.75%
Of All AI Overviews Worldwide Are in English
Ahrefs found English accounts for 52.75% of every AI Overview in its dataset, more than four times the next language. Irish content therefore competes inside the single largest language pool rather than behind a language barrier, which is why we build Irish entity signals deliberately and pair this service with our companion GEO service for Ireland instead of treating citation as something ranking delivers automatically.
AI Overview trigger rates vary widely by query category and measurement window. Ahrefs' own supporting work found the feature appears more often on informational, longer and higher-volume queries, and less often on branded, local and short ones. No single trigger rate is presented here as universally applicable.
Our SEO Services in Ireland
Technical, content and authority work built around Ireland's actual conditions: a shared English corpus, a separate regulatory footprint, and a paid search channel that is growing slower than every other digital format.
Technical SEO & Core Web Vitals
Crawlability, site architecture, structured data and Core Web Vitals, plus the international targeting layer that decides whether an Irish user is served Irish or UK content at all.
Correct en-IE annotation is treated as a technical deliverable here, not a content afterthought, because a missing or wrong hreflang signal is one of the few genuinely mechanical causes of UK content reaching Irish searchers.
Query-Class Mapping & Irish Entity Signals
We split your keyword universe into four exposure profiles rather than one: supplier-selection queries that carry an Ireland or Dublin qualifier, informational queries that compete openly against the larger UK corpus, product-comparison queries where UK media and marketplaces are strongest, and regulated queries where authoritative Irish sources hold their own.
Each profile gets a different content and authority approach, and each is reported separately so you can see which part of the problem is actually moving.
Content & On-Page SEO in Irish English
Irish English follows British spelling conventions, so spelling on its own signals nothing. What signals jurisdiction is everything underneath it: euro pricing with VAT treatment stated, named Irish regulators and statutes where they genuinely apply, county and city coverage that matches real service areas, Eircodes, and market-native professional terminology.
Written answer-first, with question-based headings and comparison tables, so the same page serves a human reader and a machine extraction pass.
Off-Page SEO & Irish Digital PR
Authority built on genuinely Irish domains, national and regional media, trade associations, professional bodies, universities and Irish directories, rather than global placements with the word Ireland inserted.
This is the most manual workstream on the page and the one local incumbents compete hardest on. Delivered through
our media distribution service as part of the retainer.
Regulated-Sector Delivery
The Central Bank of Ireland's Consumer Protection Code 2025 has been in force since 24 March 2026 and treats businesses with turnover under EUR 5 million as consumers, which changes how financial product pages may be written. Pharmaceutical promotional material must be internally examined and certified before release under the IPHA Code, and over-the-counter and device content sits under HPRA advertising rules.
We build claims tables, source mapping, named reviewers, version history and re-review triggers into the content calendar, because in regulated categories your compliance queue governs publishing velocity, not our production speed.
Irish-Language Scope for Public Bodies
Section 10A of the Official Languages (Amendment) Act 2021 requires at least 20% of a public body's advertising to be in Irish and at least 5% of its advertising budget to go to Irish-language media, defined as media where half or more of the content is in Irish. Final provisions commenced on 21 December 2024, and the obligation can pass to contractors delivering public-facing services on a public body's behalf.
An Coimisinéir Teanga's own reporting shows the largest public bodies, those spending above EUR 750,000 on advertising, on average missing both thresholds. For private commercial businesses this section does not apply at all, and we will tell you so rather than sell bilingual content you do not need.
a first-page ranking is not a citation, and in Ireland it is not a click either
Why Choose Us as Your SEO Company for Ireland?
We Answer With Measurement Method, Not With a Discount
Irish buyers, particularly those inside or adjacent to Dublin's multinational cluster, run experienced in-house teams and formal vendor due diligence. That audience does not buy on price. It buys on whether you can show your method, name your sources, and state plainly what you do not know.

We Work Daily in the World's Most AI-Saturated Search Market
In the same Ahrefs dataset that puts Ireland 44th at 12.00%, Indonesia ranks first in the world at 37.20%. Our teams have been optimising inside three times Ireland's AI Overview density since before most markets registered the shift. That is operating experience with a named source and a date, not a cost claim.
We Split the Problem Instead of Asserting One Answer
Nobody has measured how often Irish AI answers cite UK sources instead of Irish ones. Rather than invent a percentage, we map four query classes with different exposure profiles and report each separately, so you can see which segment moved and which did not.
The Transfer Stack Is Ready Before Procurement Asks
Indonesia has no EU adequacy decision, so transfers of Irish personal data run on the 2021 Standard Contractual Clauses with a documented Transfer Impact Assessment and an Article 28 processing agreement. We minimise what leaves the EEA, keep analytics access role-based and client-owned, and hand over the evidence pack unprompted.
The Republic Is Not Northern Ireland
Different currency, tax, regulators and public institutions. We monitor them as two markets and add an all-island layer only where your commercial reality justifies it, which is precisely the distinction UK-based providers most often collapse.

Frequently Asked Questions About SEO in Ireland
Is Ireland just part of the UK market for SEO purposes?
No, and treating it that way is the most common and most expensive mistake in Irish search. The two markets share a language and British spelling conventions, which is exactly why the error is so easy to make. Everything underneath differs: the currency is the euro, the financial regulator is the Central Bank of Ireland rather than the FCA, the data protection authority is the Data Protection Commission rather than the ICO, company filings sit with the Companies Registration Office rather than Companies House, tax runs through Revenue rather than HMRC, and addresses use Eircodes. A page that inserts the word Ireland into UK copy signals nothing to a search engine and even less to an Irish buyer.
Do AI Overviews affect Irish search as much as US or UK search?
No, and the gap is measurable. Ahrefs analysed 108 million AI Overview queries and found the feature on 12.00% of tracked Irish queries, placing Ireland 44th of 50 countries, against 19.10% in the UK and 20.50% in the US. Ireland ranks below Portugal, Denmark, the Czech Republic and New Zealand. Applying a US figure to an Irish account overstates the exposure by roughly 60 to 70 percent. Ireland was not late to the feature, though: Google rolled AI Overviews out to Ireland on 26 March 2025 in the first European wave, in English only and initially for signed-in users aged 18 and over.
Do UK websites really outrank Irish businesses in their own search results?
Sometimes, and it depends heavily on the type of query, which is why we refuse to answer it with one number. No published study measures what share of Irish commercial search results belongs to UK-origin content. The clearest available signal is that exposure splits by query class. Queries that carry an explicit Ireland or Dublin qualifier appear to localise strongly. Informational and how-to queries compete openly against a far larger UK corpus and are the most exposed. Product comparison queries face UK media, affiliates and marketplaces. Regulated topics tend to hold Irish sources because the authority genuinely is Irish. We map and report those four profiles separately rather than asserting a headline percentage nobody has measured.
Do we need a .ie domain to rank in Ireland?
It helps as a geographic signal but it is not a requirement and not a substitute for anything else. A business can rank in Ireland on a .com domain with correct en-IE annotation, Irish backlinks, euro pricing and genuine Irish entity signals. What matters more than the extension is whether the facts, regulators, legal context, currency and transaction details on the page all agree that this content is about the Republic of Ireland. Maintain a separate Irish page only where it differs materially in currency, legal disclosure or product availability, because near-identical en-IE and en-GB pages tend to get consolidated and add no value.
Does our website need Irish-language content?
Almost certainly not, unless you are a public body or you deliver public-facing services on behalf of one. Section 10A of the Official Languages (Amendment) Act 2021 requires at least 20% of a public body's advertising to be in Irish and at least 5% of its advertising budget to go to Irish-language media, meaning media where half or more of the content is in Irish. Final provisions commenced on 21 December 2024, and the obligation can pass through to contractors. For ordinary private commercial businesses there is no such duty, and no source we could locate quantifies meaningful private-sector commercial search demand in Irish. We would rather say that plainly than sell you bilingual content with no business case.
How is our data handled if the agency is based in Indonesia?
Indonesia does not appear on the European Commission's adequacy list, so any transfer of personal data from an Irish controller runs on a Chapter V safeguard. In practice that means the 2021 Standard Contractual Clauses, Module 2 for controller to processor or Module 3 for processor to processor, a documented Transfer Impact Assessment following Schrems II, and an Article 28 data processing agreement. The pre-2021 clauses ceased to be valid after 27 December 2022 and cannot be used. Beyond the paperwork we minimise what leaves the EEA, keep analytics and Search Console access role-based and owned by you, and provide the data-flow map and subprocessor list without being asked. EU hosting alone does not settle the question, because remote access from outside the EEA is itself part of the analysis.
What changed for financial services marketing on 24 March 2026?
The Central Bank of Ireland's Consumer Protection Code 2025 came into force, replacing the 2012 Code in full after a twelve-month implementation period following its publication on 24 March 2025. It is given effect by two statutory instruments and consolidates the Code of Conduct on Mortgage Arrears. For marketing purposes two points matter most: the definition of consumer now covers businesses with turnover below EUR 5 million, and the Code strengthens requirements around digital delivery, unregulated products being clearly separated from regulated ones, fraud, and greenwashing. Any page carrying rate, fee, eligibility, risk or comparison claims should be treated as a controlled marketing communication and routed through compliance before publication.
How do pharmaceutical and medical device approvals affect content timelines?
They govern your publishing velocity more than our production speed does. Under the IPHA Code of Practice, final promotional material must be examined and certified internally before release, and over-the-counter medicine and device content sits under Health Products Regulatory Authority advertising rules. Direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription-only medicines is prohibited. We could not locate any market-wide study giving typical Irish approval turnaround times, so we do not quote one. What we do instead is build a claims table, source mapping, intended audience, named reviewer, version history and a re-review trigger into every asset, and approve content modules independently where possible so that reusable blocks do not go back through full review each time.
Should the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland share one SEO programme?
No. They share parts of a media and commercial environment but differ in jurisdiction, currency, tax, regulation and public institutions. Merging them produces pages that are subtly wrong for both audiences and keyword sets that mix two different buyer intents. We monitor them as separate markets and add an all-island layer only where your delivery, licensing or customer base genuinely spans both.
How do you work across the time difference between Indonesia and Ireland?
Jakarta runs on Western Indonesian Time, UTC+7, which puts us seven hours ahead of Ireland in winter and six hours ahead during Irish Summer Time. Our Bali office sits an hour further ahead again. The practical consequence is that the reliable live window is the Irish morning, roughly 09:00 to 12:30 Dublin time, which lands in the Indonesian afternoon. We protect that window for calls, approvals and escalations, and run everything else asynchronously against one shared ticketing system with written acceptance criteria before production and daily handoff notes on active launches. We deliberately do not advertise a single hour-gap figure, because that number becomes wrong twice a year when Irish clocks change. We commit to the overlap window instead.
Can you guarantee first-page rankings in Ireland?
No, and no agency that understands how these systems work will promise it. Search engines control ranking, competitors keep moving, and AI answer systems are probabilistic and change their retrieval behaviour without notice. What we commit to is deliverables, quality standards, implementation timelines, transparent reporting against a defined baseline, and recommendations we can source. In Ireland specifically there is a further reason to distrust ranking guarantees: the one study conducted on Irish data found average position improving while click-through rate fell 26%, so a better ranking did not translate into more clicks.
How long before we see measurable results?
Technical fixes and indexation improvements usually show movement in impressions within the first four to eight weeks. Content and authority work compounds over three to six months, and genuinely competitive categories take longer. Regulated sectors move at the speed of your compliance queue. We deliberately avoid quoting a single Irish timeline benchmark because no independently audited one exists, and any timeline should specify which outcome it refers to: indexation, ranking, traffic, qualified lead or pipeline. Those are four different promises.
How does GEO fit in if we only sign up for SEO?
Ranking and citation run on different retrieval systems, so they are not sequential. A page can rank first and never be cited inside an AI answer, and a page on the third page of results can be cited repeatedly. English also accounts for 52.75% of all AI Overviews worldwide, which means Irish content competes inside the largest language pool with no protective language signal of the kind French or Japanese markets get. We therefore structure SEO content to be citation-ready from the first sprint, and you can scope
our companion GEO service for Ireland as a parallel or later workstream depending on budget.
