AEO starts with the reader's question. A page should answer it clearly, show where factual claims come from, and remain accessible to search engines. Useful headings, descriptive internal links, and visible supporting information help readers understand the answer.
AEO and GEO are overlapping industry labels, not separate technical standards. GEO focuses on visibility in answers produced by generative engines. AEO is also used for direct-answer experiences outside that narrower scope. Different providers use these terms differently.
For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says its normal SEO fundamentals still apply. A page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to appear as a supporting link. Google does not require a special AI schema or an AI text file. Neither indexing nor good formatting guarantees inclusion.
Track answer appearances, brand mentions, linked citations, and referral visits separately. A brand mention without a link is not a citation to your page. Google's Search Console combines AI-feature activity with other Web search traffic rather than providing a clean AEO-only total.
