Google says AI Overviews can use related searches across subtopics to find supporting information. A page may therefore be useful for one part of a question rather than only the exact words typed into Search.
To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a search snippet. Google's usual technical and content requirements apply. Google does not require special AI markup, a new schema type, or an AI text file. Following these practices does not guarantee that a page will appear.
Useful work includes crawl access, clear internal links, important information in visible text, and structured data that matches what users can see. Keep factual claims current and support them with sources.
Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode activity within the Web search report. This limits attempts to attribute every change in impressions or clicks specifically to AI Overviews. Combine Search Console with referral and conversion data, and describe each metric's limits.
